In job descriptions, you can sometimes read: “Please send your resume together with a short cover letter.”
You already know the secrets of writing a resume from the section “How to write a resume” (+ active link to the article).
Let’s now understand what a cover letter is, why it is and how to write it.
A cover letter is a document in which the candidate briefly describes his experience and skills that will be useful to the future employer. You can also tell about your motivation to work in a specific company in the cover letter. Therefore, such a letter is sometimes called a motivational letter.
A cover letter helps the employer select the most experienced and motivated candidates. And for you, this is a chance to stand out and show your interest.
What to write about in a cover letter?
First of all, pay attention to the text of the vacancy itself. Often it already states what is important for the employer to read in your letter. Most often, it is work experience and why you are suitable for this vacancy.
At the beginning of the document:
enter first and last name
write the name of the position you are applying for
Introduction:
say hello
express interest in the vacancy
Main part:
tell us why you are suitable for this position
describe your experience and required skills
argue why you want to work in this company
End:
thank you for reading the letter and considering your candidacy
leave your contacts
Now let’s write a cover letter for our fictional hero Oleg. We will remind that he is looking for a job as a cook and came across a vacancy in a prestigious restaurant. They offer good pay and the facility is 10 minutes from his home. Oleg is maximally motivated and sits down to write a cover letter. This is what he got according to our scheme:
As you can see, there is nothing complicated here. Your main task is to carefully consider the arguments why you are the best candidate for the position.
Three important things to conclude:
each letter is personalized. Don’t send the same cover letter everywhere. It will not inspire confidence and will not fully reveal your strengths and motivation for a specific position. Remember: one vacancy – a separate cover letter;
remember the rules of document design and grammar (they are the same as for resumes);
do not worry! You will definitely succeed!
